DISCLAIMER- We have decided to use this profile from a beloved TV show to only demonstrate how an application of someone looking for an MBA looks like in a fun and light hearted way. We don't own the rights to the TV show but under fair use, only using the publicly available information in a speculative way to see what MBA Conquerors would have done had someone like him reached out to us. We have no ill intentions towards anyone and every discussion moving forward with this article being the first, is only to encourage a light hearted humor while looking at the MBA process. This is merely a roleplay way of helping people understand the MBA applications process. Some topics may be too sensitive for some people to handle so skip over those articles, but hoping this helps people overall. For some reason David seemed like a really good fit for Canadian schools especially Rotman. So, we decided to go with it!
While we cannot disclose our clients personal details to help people create their own applications, we can surely look at some public fictional figures and speculate and show how you can do your MBA Applications yourself. This, in conjunction with our DIY Blogs, is going to help many prospects understand how to apply the principles we teach in DIY blogs in a slightly fun manner. A little sense of humor with an objective to help more people who have no one to help with their applications.
Let's assume, for the purpose of understanding, a candidate, who is applying to the MBA program- David Rose. Just like anyone else, David could have an aspiration for an MBA so let's make some assumptions for David's profile. We're gonna start about a few months after the end of the final episode of Schitt'$ Creek.
Profile:
GMAT Score: 740
GPA: 3.9 (Major: Art History)
Undergraduate Degree: Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from NYU, New York, NY, USA
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White, American
Industry: Retail
Function:Â Co-Owner and Creative Director
Age: 30 (Aged down from 37 because David made a little expression when asked, "How old are we?" Made the same face when his husband Patrick asked him that exact question)
Leadership Experience and Direct Reports:
David co-owns Rose Apothecary, a boutique shop in Schitt's Creek, where he oversees a small but dynamic team. His direct reports include:
2 retail associates (Stevie- Part-time previously, and Patrick),
1 marketing & PR manager (Alexis),
1 operations manager (Patrick).
Despite the shop's modest size, David's creative vision and leadership have transformed it into a beloved community hub, attracting customers from both Schitt's Creek and neighboring towns such as Elmdale. Additionally, David's husband Patrick organizes regular public events and we were also told Patrick is a big time believer in helping David deal with stress with innovative ways such as getting him a masseuse on their wedding day when the venue was destroyed!
Professional Relationships & Stakeholder Management:
David has built strong relationships with local suppliers and artisans, which has helped him source unique products for his store. He collaborates closely with his business partner, Patrick Brewer, who complements David’s creative flair with operational expertise.
Extracurriculars:
David is actively involved in community initiatives, frequently organizing local art showcases and events to promote local talent. He also advocates for inclusivity in small businesses and participates in fundraising events that support local charities. His passion for the arts and community well-being drives his efforts to enhance the cultural landscape of Schitt's Creek. As you can see on his t-shirt, David's inclusion standards are fairly visible-
Entrepreneurial Experience:
Entrepreneurship has been at core of David's overall identity. With multiple galleries running in New York after his bachelor's degree being visited by multiple patrons who were bought out to go there by his mother (Hush! No one else needs to know) to celebrity visits where one of them presented a skit on income inequality, David managed to leave an impression on the world. Even after his family lost their wealth, David turned to entrepreneurship as a means of self-discovery and independence. He successfully launched Rose Apothecary, which offers a curated selection of products, from artisanal goods to unique gifts. His entrepreneurial spirit was evident as he navigated the challenges of starting a business in a small town, quickly learning the intricacies of retail management. His experience developing relationships with customers of Blouse Barn, an upscale high-end boutique, in Elmdale helped David get the taste of the people in Schitt'$ Creek.
Experience with Brand Development, Mergers and Acquisitions:
David has played a pivotal role in shaping the brand identity of Rose Apothecary. He is known for his keen eye for design and marketing, ensuring that the store stands out in both aesthetics and customer experience. His creative campaigns have drawn attention to the shop, leading to increased foot traffic and a loyal customer base. And not to forget his way to have turned around the brand image of Blouse Barn in Elmdale. David led the ultimate negotiations for Blouse Barn's acquisition and helped them get the best deal for which the store gave him more than enough as a compensation that was enough to invest into a new business that would later become Rose Apothecary!
Passion and Purpose:
David’s passion lies in the intersection of art and commerce. He believes that retail can be an expression of creativity and a way to foster community connections. His purpose is to create a welcoming space where individuality and self-expression thrive, allowing customers to explore their unique tastes. David's X-Factor lies in his eye for fine things! Although his clothes challenge the status quo (I was told by Stevie to not use the word "Funky") but fairly good for others!
MBA Aspirations:
Recognizing the need for formal business acumen to further grow his brand because David believed his husband was a genius for having basic business knowledge, David is considering pursuing an MBA. He aims to refine his skills in strategic management and marketing while exploring innovative business practices. David is particularly interested in programs that offer flexible schedules, allowing him to balance his entrepreneurial pursuits with personal commitments. He wants to take a different approach, wants to get a part-time MBA from Toronto as he sees a great opportunity for expansion of Rose Apothecary in Canadian Market (also opening up a few doors for the commonwealth countries). Rotman School of Management is his first choice but he is also applying to a few other schools in Toronto to diversify his odds. He was inspired by his father's take on the Rosebud motel chain and decided to scale his business but at the same time more driven because of his "genius" husband who knows "so much" about running a business.
So, what do you think David's Spike factor will be? Forget that, what do you think the resume will look like? Is the way David sees the world different? Let's find out in our DIY Series with David Rose! Stay tuned. Here's a little clue:
